Language Development Resources
Language development is a layered process, and while classroom instruction lays a strong foundation, it’s often not enough to meet every student’s unique needs. Ideally, a well-designed school curriculum provides students with the comprehensive instruction needed to achieve English language mastery. The reality in many schools however is that teachers have limited time to work with students one-on-one, and that time is further limited when inevitable circumstances or classroom disruptions take place.

The language development lists below offer recommended resources for complementing your child's education in school (or even at home for home schoolers). Whether your child is ready to take the next steps and write his own first short story, or needs some extra time re-learning some language topics due to some missed time at school, any student with the motivation can benefit from these additional materials.

One important note—just as students can be reluctant readers at home, many students can also be reluctant to start a new learning routine. With so many expectations and competing interests for your child's time these days, the value of these resources will go only so far as your child's love for learning and willingness to use them. Establishing a routine and showing your own enthusiasm as an adult to work with them will go a very long way towards building their trust as an educator-mentor.

In other words, don't hand these resources to your child and expect them to know how to use them independently. Instead, take the time with them to use these resources together, and be an inspiration for self- and guided-learning.
