Reading Lists by School Grade
Selecting the right book for a child is crucial in nurturing their reading skills and keeping them engaged. To choose a level-appropriate book, it is important to consider a child's reading ability, interests, and developmental stage. Books aligned with students' reading levels help build confidence, while those slightly above can challenge and stretch their abilities.

As a rule of thumb, readers should encounter an unfamiliar vocabulary word for every few pages or minutes of reading. While books matching a child's interests can help build a love for reading, it's equally beneficial to introduce them to new genres, subjects and cultures.

The reading lists below are excellent for any child as a starter library at home or in the classroom. While many of these titles could be used for classroom purposes, they lean toward popular books that kids will enjoy on their own or with an adult at home. Books in these lists have also been carefully selected for embracing good writing standards and for improving a student's literacy and learning skills.

Note: Grade level reading lists on this site generally include books which first become appealing and appropriately challenging for children at that grade—a book well-suited for second and third graders for example would therefore appear in the second grade book list.
